Kharen Leigh

Kharyn Leigh was born and raised in New York. She was lifted up to sit at the family piano at the barely-born age of two, and she picked out the melody notes of a song of the day, “Amaryllis”. Her mother brought her for formal classical piano lessons when she was four years old. During a piano lesson when she was 12, she started putting jazz chords against the melody of a Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody. She was most fortunate to have had a forward-thinking teacher, who upon hearing the improvisation exclaimed, “HOW do you do that??” She successfully encouraged her child prodigy to continue studying the music of the masters and at the same time welcomed Kharyn’s new-found artistry and creativity in jazz improvisation. “Her positive reaction allowed me to continue studying the music of the masters (My favorite composers are Chopin, Ravel, and Rachmaninoff) until I was 17."

"I was accepted---for one year, when I was 13 years old---as a student of the late Abby Whiteside. She was a world-respected Master Teacher of music whose concepts regarding the playing of music were unique, innovative, and quite revolutionary in the world of music. Her teachings---more than any other musical learning experience I’ve ever had---made a permanent mark on my entire approach to playing the piano. “Indispensables of Piano Playing”, Abby’s final book, was published posthumously by some of her students and friends."

Kharyn Leigh’s inimitable style of playing popular and jazz music we all love with a classical influence earned her the esteemed honor of “Jazz Pianist of the Year” in San Jose, California. She resides in Texas with her beloved Chihuahuas Ambrosia and Miguelito.
